Just in time for the 2011 Holiday Season, Amazon has introduced 4 new Kindle models. While three of them do have nice new features, it is the fourth one, the Kindle Fire, that has really raised the bar.
The Kindle Fire gives you access to 18 million books, movies, TV Shows, songs, and magazines. Your Amazon content is stored in the Amazon cloud and Amzon Prime mebers get unlimited, instant streaming of over 10,000 popular movies and TV shows… and did I mention — it’s in COLOR?
The new Kindle Fire weighs 14.6 ounces and measures 7.5 inches by 4.7 inches and is not quite a half inch thick.
The display is 7 inches the long way and has a resolution of 1024 by 600 pixels at 169 ppi with 16 million colors. It has an anti-reflective treatment. It also features a technology that is similar to the iPad and provides an extra wide viewing angle, meaning that you can easily share what is displayed on the screen with other people.
In addition, the Kindle Fire sports a different, and more durable screen than other models. It is more resistant to scatches, scrapes and bumbs, and, they claim, it is 30 times harder than plastic and 20 times stiffer.
With a dual-core processor, Amazon Cloud storage, and the ever efficient Silk browser, the Kindle Fire gives you a powerful user experience, allowing you to download videos, all while you are browsing or reading.
New User Interface
Like the new Kindle Touch and Kindle Touch 3G, the Kindle Fire features the new Touchscreen technology. The Kindle Fire has been designed for easy one hand holding, and the Touchscreen technology adds to the ease of use.
Easy Connectivity
The Kindle Fire uses Wi-Fi to connect you online.
QUOTE — Supports public and private Wi-Fi networks or hotspots that use 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n, or enterprise networks with support for WEP, WPA and WPA2 security using password authentication; does not support connecting to ad-hoc (or peer-to-peer) Wi-Fi networks. — END QUOTE
Note – Unlike other Kindle models, the Kindle Fire does not support 3G connectivity.
Easy Storage
The Kindle Fire relies upon a combination of onbaord storage and unlimited Cloud storage.
Onboard, about 6GB of the total 8GB is available for your content. This translates into approximately 80 apps, in addition to about 10 movies or 800 songs or 6,000 books. However, because there is free cloud storage, it may make sense to move your content back and forth from the cloud to your device, as needed.
Easy Power
It is important to realize that battery usage is greatly affected by the features in use. That said, with the wireless off, Amazon claims that you have up to 8 hours of continuous reading or 7 hours of video playback. The device can be fully charged in about 4 hours and comes equiped with a US power adapter. It also has the ability to be charged from a computer through the USB port.
Easy Viewing
Among the Kindle innovations offered by the Kindle Fire is the ability to view magazines in full color. Currently, there are hundreds of magazine titles available.
Some magazines are offered in special editions and come with video and audio built-in. They may also feature other interactive options.
In addition to magazines, the Kindle Fire will also allow you to view more than 100,000 movies and TV shows. There are many new releases included in the library. They are available to rent or purchase and can be accessed by downloading or streaming.
If you are an Amazon Prime member, there are more than 10,000 TV shows and popular movies available to you via unlimited and commercial free streaming.
If you think about it, this featre alone maybe worth the price of admission — $199 for the Kindle Fire and an Amazon Prime subscription for just $79 per year. Even if you aren’t a reader, the Kindle Fire may be a good choice.
Kindle Fire Apps and Games
One of the perks of owning the Fire is the gift of a free paid app given to you each day. There are also game apps and other apps available. All available Kindle Fire App have been specifically tested on the Kindle Fire, providing you with the confidence that they will work.
Kindle Fire Convenience
This model of Kindle comes with a built-in email application that will pick up your email accounts and place them into one inbox for your viewing convenience. You also have the ability to import from other email accounts their contact lists as well as the messages. If you need different email funtionality, there are other emmail apps avaiable in the Amazon Appstore.
Need to look over a Word document or PDF file? Just email it to your Kindle Fire and read it on the go!
Among the content formats supported by the Kindle Fire are: Kindle (AZW), TXT, PDF, unprotected MOBI, PRC natively, Audible (Audible Enhanced (AA, AAX)), DOC, DOCX, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP, non-DRM AAC, MP3, MIDI, OGG, WAV, MP4, VP8
Kindle Fire Syncs
Just like othe Kindle models, the Kindle Fire uses Amazon’s proprietary Whispersync technology. Whispersync keeps track of your bookmarks, notes, highlights, and last page read, and insures that they are synchronized across all of your devices.
With the Kindle Fire, it even syncs your video. This means that you can pick up your Kindle Fire and start where you left off on any movie of TV show.
Whispersync works for all of the devices that are registered to the same account. Whyspersync comes installed and operating by default. While Whyspersyn can be turned off for books, it can’t be turned off for Amazon Instant Videos.
All in all, if you have been waiting for color, and for a more extended content list — magazines, TV, video, the Kindle Fire may be a good choice. Certainly its fairly low price of $199 makes it an attractive option for anyone.
